About Us
THE WOMEN'S BOOKSHOP opened in April 1989 in Mt. Eden, Auckland. A decade later, in 1999, we moved to a larger space in Ponsonby Road, a vibrant area with a thriving bar and cafe scene as well as many specialty shops.

Our purpose has always been to promote women's writing and to provide books reflecting women's diverse lives and interests. We also have lots of men customers and we welcome them. In recent years we have become one of New Zealand’s leading specialists in therapy and counselling books.

As a quality, independent New Zealand bookstore, we are renowned for our passion for books and for our personal service. This includes fast, efficient MAIL-ORDER all over the country, and a commitment to sourcing SPECIAL ORDERS - if it's available we'll get it for you.

We have been awarded NZ Bookseller of the Year for Promotional Activities three times (2000,2001,2002) and the Business Citizenship Award in the 2003 HerBusiness Businesswoman of the Year Awards.
In 2005 we won NZ Independent Bookseller of the Year.

We host frequent author events and publish BOOKCHOICE, a bimonthly printed newsletter that gives readers an informed guide to good books. Books in the latest newsletter appear on this website under NEW BOOKCHOICE.

We are also much more than a bookshop. We are a community resource providing such services as a noticeboard; information about events, courses and community happenings; selling tickets and providing a friendly inviting space where women can meet.

We are very grateful to the many volunteers who help us run events and stuff more than 4000 thousand copies of BookChoice into envelopes. (Email us if you would like to become involved!)

CAROLE BEU
I’ve been a traveller and a secondary school teacher of English and Drama for many years. I have two young-adult children and my other great interest, as well as books, is theatre.

For many years I was Deputy Chair of the Board of Directors of Booksellers NZ, the joint association of publishers and booksellers. I was involved in the Listener Women’s Book Festival throughout the 90's, and am currently on the Board of the Auckland Writers’ and Readers’ Festival.

I opened The Women’s Bookshop in 1989 and it is the perfect job. Books are my passion, my hobby and my work - and I get to meet wonderful women every day!
