Hot Flushes Cold Science : A history of the modern menopause
order quantity
NZ$ 30.00 each
Paperback
Author:
Louise Foxcroft
In Stock:
1
For over two thousand years, attitudes to the menopause have created dread, shame and confusion. This meticulously researched and always entertaining book traces the history of 'the change of life' from its appearance in classical texts, to the medical literature of the 18th century, to up-to-the-minute contemporary clinical approaches. Its progression from natural phenomenon to full-blown pathological condition from the 1700s led to bizarre treatments and often dangerous surgery, and formalized a misogyny which lingers in the treatment of menopausal women today. Louise Foxcroft delves into the archives, the boudoir and the Gladstone bag to reveal the elements that formed the menopause myth: chauvinism, collusion, trial, error and secrecy. She challenges us to rethink absurd assumptions that have persisted through history - that sex stops at the menopause, or that ageing should be feared. It redresses the myths and captures the truths ...

In 2002 a major study into Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) was suddenly halted when it appeared that study participants who were taking HRT had a far higher rate of heart attack and breast cancer than those not taking hormones. In the months that followed many women around the world stopped taking HRT out of fear for their health, despite the fact that it can actually offer many health benefits it can help combat hot flushes, protect bones from thinning, and is believed by some doctors to offer protection from breast and gynaecological cancers. Many women are now asking whether the risks of taking HRT outweigh the benefits. This book is designed to help them find the right answer for them. In "HRT: Everything You Need to Know", Tara Parker-Pope looks beyond the media hype surrounding HRT to reveal how both the scientific community and the media have misreported research findings, and how the research itself is statistically flawed. ...

Dr Beverley Lawton

Menopause is a "hot" topic for many women today. Older women make up a greater proportion of the population and this is growing. With modern obstetrics, medicines and good public health, a New Zealand woman reaching fifty today would expect to live another 33.5 years or 26.0 years for non-Maori and Maori respectively. This means that menopause and its sometimes difficult associated symptoms is extremely important as women strive to live a quality life. This book outlines in clear, no-nonsense language the issues that menopausal women confront and helps them through the maze of medical advice on offer.
Dr Beverley Lawton co-founded the Wellington Menopause Clinic, works as a senior research fellow at the Women’s Health Research Centre, Wellington School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and is the President of the Australasian Menopause Society.

In July 2001, a study by the US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute suggested that HRT should not be recommended for long-terms use: in fact, the results were so alarming, the study was halted before its completion date. It was found that Prempro, a combination of estrogen and progestin, which was a "standard issue" HRT formulation for post-menopausal women, increased the risk of invasive breast cancer, heart disease, stroke and pulmonary embolisms (blood clots). However, Prempro did rescue the incidence of bone fractures from osteoporosis and colon cancer. Nevertheless, the idea that HRT is a long-term fountain of youth is slowly dissolving. Woman are now more confused than every about HRT and are looking for natural solutions to relieve both short-term menopausal symptoms as well as protect their health in the long-term as a result of estrogen loss. The Natural Woman's Guide to Hormone Replacement Therapy is a treasure trove of ...

With poignant humour and a bold attitude reminiscent of the "Bitch" book series, "Not Guilty By Reason Of Menopause" discusses the lighter (and hopefully cooler) side of menopause. Laugh-out-loud sayings accompany retro photographs in this lightweight gift book, which also doubles as a fan. When women of a certain age know the calcium content of a pitcher full of Pina Coladas and can pick out their colon in a line-up, they deserve to have what this book delivers: a little black dress made of terry cloth, antiperspirant in six packs and a personal towel boy.

Paperback
Author:
Mary J. Shomon

In her newest book, Mary Shomon takes readers on a quest to understand the profound influence the thyroid has on a woman's hormonal health in the perimenopause and menopause years, and discusses how undiagnosed thyroid problems may be the real culprit behind what many assume are peri/menopausal symptoms. Many women assume they're suffering from perimenopause or menopause and embark on a wild goose chase of hormone replacement, go soy crazy, start smearing themselves with yam and progesterone creams, or end up taking all sorts of herbs, from black cohosh to chasteberry. But, when the real culprit is a thyroid problem, these approaches simply don't work. And by age 60, it's estimated that as many as half of women have an underactive thyroid. A drop in reproductive hormones frequently triggers a thyroid slowdown - a 'thyropause' - that causes misleading symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, and depression.

For nearly as long as women have been around, they have been going through menopause. It is a bodily process as old as human birth, death, and of course, menstruation. Like many normal biological events, menopause was gradually medicalized, and with the rise of pharmaceutical medicine, women and their doctors were convinced that it was an "estrogen deficiency disease" that could be treated by supplementing the body's declining estrogen levels with hormones. By 2002 hormone treatment had been on the market for more than fifty years when doctors and women alike were shocked by the results of a massive clinical trial, the Women's Health Initiative: women taking hormones had more heart attacks, breast cancer, strokes, pulmonary embolisms, and blood clots than women who did not, and patients were left scrambling to find new and sometimes difficult answers to their menopause and midlife health questions.

Today, millions of women in their twenties and thirties, many of whom are just beginning to plan a family, are receiving the shocking news that their reproductive years are already over. Whether due to an autoimmune disorder, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or the often undiagnosed condition known as Premature Ovarian Failure (POF), premature menopause is common, increasing -- and almost always traumatic.
